Modern Love

It's ironic how 'love' is taken so lightly these days.

In this modern day, couples can break up and get together with other people in the blink of an eye.

That's why when I see old couples in hospital who have been together for decades, I think they are very cute and loving. Or when I see an old lady/man who cries and doesn't want to live anymore because his/her spouse has passed away recently, I feel for him/her.

Perhaps, in this age where everything is fast-paced and on demand, we keep on searching for something better instead of cherishing the precious things that we already have.

there's an interesting study about this.

the feeling of being in love is hormonal - and the chief hormone for love is oxytocin, coupled with the dopamine reward system... kinda like how drug addiction works. scans show that a brain in love looks remarkably like the brain of someone addicted to cocaine. notice how new couples seem to be addicted to each other and all they can think about is their other half.

the level of oxytocin remains high over the course of a year up till three... so a relationship will have to grow past the chemical high in order to be sustained. it will need to develop into a stable, steady state of partnership and commitment.

what's interesting is research shows that 10% of people will retain such high levels of oxytocin all their lives. so for all their married life, they feel like newlyweds. the scientists refer to these people as "swans".

i'm very very interested in the science of love :D

Oxytocin eh? I wouldn't have thought it would be that hormone. Then women in labour should be very happy? haha.

But yeah, I think for most relationships to last for a long time, I think compatibility, trust and communication are important things.
