Google Earth

Cool right? Posted by Picasa

Was just fooling around a bit this Goggle Earth thingy. Looks pretty cool though.

Now if only they had this when I was learning Geography in high school... I'm sure I could learn so much better.

Wow, the wonders of technology.

I can't see my house, but I can see the nearby lake. If you think that's cool, try scrolling your view to the US, especially the cities and suburbs.

See it for yourself.

If you watch the tv series "24", you can actually have the satelites send you 3-second updates to track moving vehicles and such, with excellent resolution (can see people's face!).

Check out popular places like Redmond (Microsoft), Baghdad, Or just LAX. The resolution at some places is just amazing. Makes me wanna buy a GPS :)

google earth doesn't seem to know malaysia well - or penang, at least. i think that big island should be Pulau Jerjak instead of Teluk Tengkorak. (Skull Bay? *Crude!) And Sungai Ara is definitely further south.

kryptos5> that's why la...i did think it was becoz msia was such a 'remote' country ma..
pip> yeah, it's pretty cool. I saw such equipment on the show *4400* where they used it to track their own secret agents...but isn't that kinda a volation of privacy? hmm...

In reality, even the best satelites see people as blurry dots.

Our atmospere is fluid, it moves. It disturbs the path of the incoming light.

I've seen a picture of Mars recorded through a telescope with webcam before. Its night time so the air is not moving so much. Even so, Mars looked like a round flag waving in the air.

Now, imagine what the interference would be like at daytime.

hmmm...so the show was a fake recording or what? but granted, they did try to make it realistic since the ppl in there were quite blurry dots too...

Certainly fake. These satelites cost a lot, and no intellegence agency would be willing to give it up for some civillians wanting to shoot a movie.

Especially the part where they'll need to use the manuevering thrusters to move the satelite into position. Burns fuel. Burns money.

Plus, the best spy satelites actually lower its altitute from Low Earth Orbit into earth's atmospere (at the edge of course, like 80km?). Imagine the orbital decay.

As far as film makers are concerned. It is cheaper and easier to use a blimp/helicopter/plane or whatever that flies.
